Neural synchrony is the simultaneous / synchronous oscillations of membrane potentials in a network of neurons connected with electrical synapses (gap junctions). It is considered by some theorists to be the neural correlate of consciousness.
A flash animation illustrating neural synchrony.
This is our main curriculum page on neurons, their function, and how they communicate both chemically and electrically. It contains flash animations on the generation of an action potential, the differences between electrical synapses and chemical synapses, and animations illustrating the structures and processes involved in electrical neurotransmission and chemical neurotransmission.
